Phoenix Women's Swimming Team Nabs Fourth Straight League Crown

AKRON, Ohio - The Green Bay women's swimming and diving squad continued its Horizon League dominance, winning its fourth consecutive conference title Saturday night in Akron, Ohio. The Phoenix women totaled 832 points to outdistance runner-up Wright State by 61 points.

The Green Bay men placed fifth in the league with 545.5 points. Wright State won with a score of 794.

On the final day, Green Bay's women took gold and silver in the 3-meter diving competition. Kari Helland was victorious with a score of 253.80 in the finals, while Lauren McGraw posted a 245.10, and she earned Female Diver of the Meet honors after winning the 1-meter earlier in the week. Both divers will compete in the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals next month, making it the first time in school history that two Phoenix divers have qualified for the event in the same season.

In the lanes, Green Bay had a strong showing in the women's 200-yard butterfly Saturday, going 2-3-4. Shannon Demrow (2:06.41), Allison Thut (2:07.13) and Ashley Warzon (2:08.17) gave the Phoenix a huge lift by combining for 48 points.

Meanwhile, standout Danielle DeGrand was the runner up in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.82.

The women capped their team victory with a second-place effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay. DeGrand, Demrow, Dana Doute and Laurel Yelton registered a time of 3:29.04, the second-fastest time in league championship history.

Other top-8 swimmers for the women on Saturday included: Deanna DeGrand (7th) in the 1,650-yard freestyle; Mary Stravinski (6th), Yelton (7th) and Megan Jacobi (8th) in the 200 back; Alyssa Danielson (5th) and Christine Siirila (7th) in the 100-yard freestyle; Doute (4th) and Jamie Larsen (8th) in the 200-yard breaststroke; and Gretchen Herrema (8th) in the 200-yard butterfly.

For the Phoenix men, Alex Hill added a conference championship in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.18. He finished the four-day event with a pair of league titles and a runner-up placing and was named Co-Men's Swimmer of the Meet.

Additional top-8 finishers on the men's side were: Wilson Robinson (4th) on the 1-meter board; Dustin Dietrich (6th) in the 1,650 free; Cory Carlson (7th) in the 200 back; Jason Askew (7th) and Andrew Gelden (8th) in the 200 breast; and Dan Judge (8th) in the 200 fly.

Head coach Jim Merner was named Women's Swimming Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season, while diving coach Tom Stover was tabbed as the Women's Diving Coach of the Year.
