Dale Race, former longtime head coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, is in his sixth year at UW-Green Bay. Later this season, he will be coaching on the sidelines for the 1,000th time in a collegiate game.

Race posted a 363-177 record during an 18-year head coaching career at NCAA Division II Minnesota-Duluth (1984-98) and the now-defunct Milton College (1975-79) in Milton, Wis.

Race coached Kowalczyk during his first four seasons at UMD from 1984 to 1988, where the duo helped lead the Bulldogs to a 95-29 record and four straight national tournament appearances. Over his career in Duluth, Race racked up nine 20-plus win seasons and eight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships.

After stepping down as the winningest coach in Bulldogs history in 1998, Race became the school's first Bulldog Club coordinator and director of athletics marketing.

Race graduated from UW-Oshkosh in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education, and then taught for one year at Grafton (Wis.) High School while also working as the Black Hawks' freshman basketball coach. The following year, he accepted an assistant coaching post at Milton and held the position for four years until his promotion to head coach in 1975.

He earned his master's degree in guidance and counseling from UW-Whitewater in 1973.

In between his head coaching stints, Race was an assistant to UW-Eau Claire coaching legend Ken Anderson from 1979 to 1984. Included among his playing and coaching accolades are memberships in the UW-Oshkosh, Milton College and NSIC Athletic Halls of Fame. He was inducted into the Minnesota-Duluth Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 2004.

The Marinette, Wis., native was a nine-time letterwinner in basketball, football and track as a prep. As a collegiate basketball player at UW-Oshkosh, Race helped lead the Titans to consecutive NAIA tournament berths in 1967 and 1968.

Race and his wife, Margaret, are the parents of two adult daughters, Jennifer and Kari.
