Cotton's Late Swish Gives Phoenix 76-73 Win Over UIC
Feb. 28, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Troy Cotton drained a 3-pointer from the right baseline with 2.6 seconds left to play to give the Green Bay Phoenix (14-14, 8-9) a 76-73 victory over the UIC Flames (15-14, 8-9) Thursday night at the Resch Center. Cotton's trey capped a big night from deep for the Phoenix, which nailed 14 threes, eight courtesy of Ryan Tillema. Tillema scored 32 points, one shy of his career high, on 11 of 17 shooting, including 8 of 12 from distance. His eight 3-pointers made were just one shy of the school record. The junior also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Cotton tallied a season-high 15 points in just 17 minutes for the Phoenix. He was 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. His heroics were needed after UIC erased a seven-point deficit with less than a minute remaining. Green Bay, the top free throw shooting team in the Horizon League, missed four straight from the line over a 30-second span, allowing the Flames to chip away. Karl White Jr.'s 3-pointer with 8 ticks left knotted the score at 73-73. However, Green Bay's Rahmon Fletcher broke free off the ensuing in-bounds pass and found Cotton wide open on the right side. It was Fletcher's ninth assist of the game, one off his career-best mark. The 14 made threes were a season high for Green Bay, which shot 60.9 percent from beyond the arc (14-of-23). The Phoenix went just 13 of 34 over its previous three games. Green Bay closes the Horizon League slate Saturday night at the Resch Center against Loyola. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The Horizon League Tournament tips off on Tuesday, March 4. Green Bay's opponent and game site are still to be determined. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
