March 4, 2008
VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Green Bay Phoenix (15-15) saw its season come to an end Tuesday night at the hands of the Valparaiso Crusaders (19-12) in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament. The Crusaders had 45 free throw attempts, 36 in the second half, to just 22 for the Phoenix in Valpo's 75-67 victory. Green Bay was held to a season-low 17 first-half points after shooting under 30 percent. The score was tied at 13 with 9:02 left in the first half, but the Phoenix was held scoreless more than seven minutes as Valpo made its move. The Phoenix trailed by 12, 29-17, at intermission. Green Bay was down by as many as 16 in the second half, but pulled within four, 64-60, with 2:43 remaining. The comeback was courtesy of full-court pressure and better than 55 percent shooting that led to 50 second-half points by the Phoenix. However, the Phoenix was unable to complete its second straight comeback over Valpo because Green Bay had 21 turnovers on the evening to just 14 for the Crusaders. Green Bay finished the season with a 3-12 road record. Randy Berry registered his second straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Schachtner led the Phoenix with 14 points, while Ryan Tillema (13) and Rahmon Fletcher (13) also hit double figures. Green Bay had advanced to the league tournament semifinals in each of the previous three years. The Phoenix loses just one player, senior Tevah Morris, to graduation. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
