Mike Schachtner is UW-Green Bay's first men's basketball Academic All-American since Tony Bennett in 1992.

Feb. 28, 2007

GREEN BAY, Wis. - University of Wisconsin-Green Bay sophomore forward Mike Schachtner has been named to the men's basketball ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He is the third Phoenix player all-time to earn the honor, joining Tom Jones (1974) and Tony Bennett (1991, 1992).

Schachtner joins first-team honoree Stephanie Gross of the women's soccer team as Academic All-America selections from UW-Green Bay this academic year. He was one of just two sophomores to earn the award, joining second-team pick Brett Winkelman of North Dakota State. Butler junior guard A.J. Graves, named to the first team, joins Schachtner as a selection from the Horizon League.

A native of Somerset, Wis., Schachtner became eligible for the honor by being named to the Academic All-District V first team. He was named a second-team All-Horizon League pick earlier this week and ranks second on the Phoenix in scoring at 15.1 points per game. Schachtner leads the team with nine 20-plus point games and two 30-plus point games this season. He currently ranks seventh nationally with a .917 free throw percentage, is third in the Horizon League with a .463 three-point field goal percentage and fifth in the league with a .494 field goal percentage.

Schachtner, who carries a 3.844 grade point average while focusing on general studies, scored a career-high 36 points Dec. 12 against Chicago State, hitting 11 of 15 shots including seven of eight 3-pointers. He also posted 31 points against Cleveland State Jan. 6 to make him the first Phoenix player since Jeff Nordgaard in 1995-96 to post multiple 30-point games in the same season.

In Horizon League games this season, Schachtner led UW-Green Bay with an average of 15.9 points per game and just missed out on setting the single-season league record for free throw percentage in league-only games at .958.

Fourth-seeded UW-Green Bay (17-14) will compete in the second round of the Horizon League tournament at 7 p.m. Central time Friday in Dayton, Ohio, as it faces fifth-seeded Youngstown State.
