Green Bay Well Represented on Horizon League Winter All-Academic Teams

Ten Phoenix student-athletes gain academic accolades

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay Athletics once again showed its academic strength, as 10 Green Bay student-athletes earned Horizon League All-Academic team honors Thursday. Green Bay's 10 student-athletes ranked third-best among 10 league schools, tying with Wright State.

Green Bay continued its streak for the 2007-08 academic season for having at least one academic all-league selection for every Horizon League sport offered; it is the only Horizon League institution that can make that claim through two seasons of the academic year.

Women's swimming and diving led the way for Green Bay has five student-athletes were honored. Seniors Dana Doute (Kiel, Wis.), Kari Helland (Wayzata, Minn.) and Lauren McGraw (Woodbury, Minn.), junior Kelsey Hausken (Stillwater, Minn.) and sophomore Allison Thut (Green Bay, Wis.) were all first-time honorees.

On the men's side, senior Bobby Balow (Racine, Wis.) was a repeat winner after earning academic all-league honors in 2007. Sophomores Travis Mathers (Baraboo, Wis.) and Jordan Mathes (Kiel, Wis.) were recognized for their academic achievement for the first time.

For men's basketball, junior Mike Schachtner (Somerset, Wis.) was a repeat honoree following his selection in 2007. Schachtner also was named a second-team academic All-American earlier this year.

In women's basketball, senior Kayla Groh (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) gathered academic all-league honors for the second straight year after earning second-team academic all-district V honors in 2007 and 2008.

Each Academic All-Horizon League team has an equal number of representatives as the program's respective first-team all-league squad. Honorees are selected by sports information directors and faculty athletics representatives of the 10 Horizon League institutions.
