Women's Basketball Clamps Down On Milwaukee With 79-64 Win
Feb. 2, 2008
MILWAUKEE - The Green Bay women's basketball team (16-4, 8-1) shut down the Horizon League's top player with a team effort both on offense and defense Saturday afternoon as the Phoenix defeated Milwaukee 79-64 at the Klotsche Center. Milwaukee's Traci Edwards, who had 41 straight games in double figures heading into Saturday, was held to just two field goal attempts and had just five points in 18 minutes. The Phoenix also out-rebounded the league's top rebounding team by a 35-26 margin. Offensively, Green Bay's five starters all scored in double figures for the second straight outing, led by Lavesa Glover's 18 points. Rachel Porath added 17 points and a game-high four steals while Kayla Groh had an all-around effort of 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kati Harty and Erin Templin rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman Kayla Tetschlag came off the bench to spark Green Bay's rebounding effort, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, including four offensive caroms. Green Bay got out to an early 10-point lead by holding Milwaukee without a field goal for over six minutes as the Phoenix took a 15-5 lead with 12:56 to play. That early hot start proved to be enough, as Milwaukee got no closer than seven points the rest of the way and Green Bay held a double-figure advantage for all but 20 seconds of the second half. The Phoenix shot 56.7 percent from the field in the decisive first half, as Glover was 5-of-8 from the floor to lead the way with 10 first-half points. After not attempting a free throw in the first half, Green Bay got to the line in the second stanza, converting its final 19 shots of 20 attempts for the game, including 10-10 in the final 2:18 of the game to seal the win. Porath had a career-best 8-of-8 effort from the line to lead the way. Green Bay finished with a 46-16 advantage in points in the paint and a 24-11 lead in points off turnovers. Milwaukee had a 43-7 advantage in bench scoring, as reserves Lindsay Laur and Maurika Hickman tallied career-bests with 20 points apiece. The Phoenix returns to the road Thursday, Feb. 7 to take on Youngstown State at 4:15 p.m. CT. |
