Green Bay women's basketball (12-3, 4-0) will put its eight-game winning streak, and 23-game winning streak against Horizon League foes, on the line when it takes on Butler and Valparaiso on the road this week.
This weekend's contests will air live on AM 1400 WDUZ "The Fan" in the Green Bay area, with Bruce VandenPlas on the call. Live audio is also available here.
Phoenix Fast Fact: Green Bay continues to find success from three-point range this season, as the Phoenix is firing an impressive 44.6 percent from downtown, good for the top spot in the NCAA. A trio of Green Bay players lead the Horizon League in three-point percentage: Kati Harty (1st, .531), Kayla Groh (2nd, .489) and Rachel Porath (3rd, .484).
Scouting Green Bay: Heather Golden was stellar off the bench in a pair of Horizon League wins for Green Bay last week, as the redshirt freshman guard had back-to-back career bests for the Phoenix. Entering the week averaging just 3.1 points per game, Golden posted a career-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 19 minutes against Cleveland State. Then, in Green Bay's win over Youngstown State, Golden went for 15 points in 22 minutes as a reserve while adding career-highs and team-bests of five rebounds and four steals.
Junior guard Rachel Porath ranks 10th in the nation with her impressive .602 field goal percentage, making her the top-ranked guard in that category. Porath is the only player under 6-0 ranked in the top 15 nationally, and only two guards are in the top 30. What is more impressive is her percentage includes a 31-for-64 mark from three-point range. The top 24 players, excluding Porath, have a combined 33 three-point field goals made. When shooting inside the arc, Porath is firing a white-hot 70.1 percent.
Green Bay has been known for its stellar defense since the program's inception. Case in point: In its 612-game history as a Division I program, just 34 times has a Phoenix opponent scored 80 or more points. However, a Green Bay foe reaching 80 points offensively does not assure a win, as Youngstown State found out Jan. 12 in its 85-80 setback to the Phoenix. The game marked the fourth time in team Division I history Green Bay earned a win while allowing 80 or more points.
Scouting Butler: The Bulldogs are off to one of its best starts in program history, as the team boasts a 12-2 mark overall. Butler is led by Lade Akande, who is averaging 16.1 ppg after leading the Bulldogs with 17 points in its 72-57 win over UIC Jan. 12. Susan Lester is adding 14.1 points per contest.
In a rematch of last year's Horizon League title game, Green Bay and Butler enter Thursday's game with the best overall records of the league. Butler has won 10 of its last 11 games while Green Bay is on an eight-game winning streak.
All-time series: Green Bay leads, 28-7
Green Bay vs. Butler at Indianapolis: GB leads, 10-4
Current streak: W22
Scouting Valparaiso: The Crusaders will face Milwaukee Thursday before hosting Green Bay Saturday. Valpo is coming off a tough road setback to Loyola Jan. 12, but the Crusaders have the momentum of the nation's 12th-longest home court winning streak heading into this weekend's action.
Valpo is led by the scoring tandem of Agnieska Kulaga and Aimee Litka, who are averaging 14.8 and 14.0 points per game, respectively.
All-time series: Green Bay leads, 15-3
Green Bay vs. Valparaiso at Valparaiso: GB leads, 8-1
Current streak: W2
