The Green Bay women's basketball team gets the 2007-08 season underway this weekend when the Phoenix takes on Drake Friday at 7:05 p.m. It is the first of three straight games for the Phoenix against the Missouri Valley Conference and one of four on the season, all on the road.
Friday's contest will air live on AM 1400 WDUZ "The Fan" in the Green Bay area, with Bruce VandenPlas on the call. Live stats and pay-per-view video are available through the Drake website.
Phoenix Fast Fact: Friday's game extends Green Bay's streak of opening the regular season on the road to 21, as the team has never opened the regular season at home since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1987-88.
Scouting Green Bay: Perennially one of the nation's winningest teams, Green Bay is coming off its finest season on record where the team went 29-4 and advanced to the NCAA second round for the second time in program history. Along the way, the team went 16-0 in the Horizon League and clipped off a record-setting 26-game winning streak.
Leading the way for the Phoenix this season is junior Rachel Porath, who was selected to the Horizon League's preseason first team. Last season, Porath was fourth on the team in scoring with 9.4 ppg while shooting an impressive 53.5 percent from the field
Joining Porath for the third straight season in the starting lineup is senior Kayla Groh, who continues to bring versatility to the Phoenix. Last year she was fifth in scoring with 8.8 ppg, is second in assists (2.6 apg) and was 20th in the NCAA with an .859 free throw percentage.
Scouting Drake: The Bulldogs were the Cinderella story of the 2007 NCAA tournament, as Drake rallied through the Missouri Valley Conference tournament to claim the league's at-large bid to the Big Dance. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 14-19 mark after battling through multiple injuries.
