Green Bay Falls to Youngstown State in Softball Season Finale

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay was unable to complete its perfect home season on Sunday afternoon, as the Phoenix fell to the Youngstown State Penguins (12-35, 6-16) by an 8-3 count. The loss dropped the Phoenix to 10-23 overall and 4-9 in Horizon League play. Anna Bluemel (6-12) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. After tossing a shutout against the Penguins on Saturday, she ran into early trouble, but allowed just one run in the first. Green Bay knotted the score at 1-1 when Samantha Howe cracked her first career home run, a high drive over the left-field fence, in the bottom of the second inning. The Phoenix continued to smack extra-base hits in the third. Dana Brockman led off with a triple and came in on a one-out two-bagger by Leah Korger. However, Youngstown State put three runs on the board in the fourth, as the Penguins strung together four hits, including a home run. The Phoenix cut the deficit to just one, 4-3, in the bottom half of the frame on an unearned run but never scored the equalizer. Youngstown State put the game out of reach in the sixth, plating four runs off Samantha Schmeltzer, who was in her third inning of work. A fielder's choice ground ball to short in which no out was recorded was the key play in the inning. All four runs scored after that play, which took place with one out. YSU totaled 11 hits, while Green Bay notched six in the regular-season finale for both squads. It was the final home game for seniors Bluemel, Brockman, Vanessa Lefan and Jenna Woepse. Green Bay will be next in action at the Horizon League Tournament, which begins Thursday in Chicago. The three-day tournament, hosted by Loyola, will conclude Saturday.
