March 15, 2008

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Green Bay (2-7) posted its second straight split at the Rebel Spring Games to bring its tournament mark to 2-2 with eight games remaining in the Florida event. The Phoenix downed Monmouth by a 10-4 final in the first game, but dropped a 3-2 decision in the second.

Green Bay posted a season-high 10 runs on 10 hits against Monmouth. The Phoenix had scored just 12 runs in its first seven games of the season.

With the score knotted 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Jenna Woepse started a seven-run Phoenix rally with a leadoff hit that resulted in a two-base throwing error. The floodgates opened from there, as Green Bay banged out three extra-base hits in the frame and forced the Hawks' defense into multiple errors.

Woepse, Katie Cooney, Missy Schleicher and Vanessa Lefan all went 2-for-4. Cooney also picked up the win on the hill, as she had four strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

For the second straight day, Green Bay narrowly missed earning a sweep, as the club suffered another 3-2 loss, this time to Robert Morris.

Freshman Samantha Schmeltzer pitched well in the first start of her college career, but was saddled with the loss. All three of the Colonials' runs scored after two were out.

Green Bay rallied for two in the fifth, but Krissy Hanson, who represented the tying run, was stranded at third base. The Phoenix was unable to threaten in either of the final two innings. Green Bay managed just four hits in the tilt, while Robert Morris picked up eight.

Green Bay continues play in the Rebel Spring Games with another double header on Sunday. The Phoenix will take on Rhode Island at 9 a.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m.
