Walk-off Hit Keys Phoenix Softball Sweep
March 18, 2008
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Green Bay softball team (5-8) rallied for a come-from-behind win in the second game of its double header Tuesday afternoon to earn a sweep on the day and improve its record in the Rebel Spring Games to 5-3. Missy Schleicher delivered the walk-off, game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth, as she singled through the left side with the bases loaded and just one out. The base hit gave Green Bay a 4-3 win over Army, its first one-run victory of the season against three defeats. With the Phoenix trailing 3-0, Green Bay posted a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to get within striking distance. Then, with two outs in the seventh, Sara Junion smashed a liner that was misplayed by the Army left fielder, allowing a pair of runs to cross and force extra innings. Anna Bluemel recorded the victory, her third of the tournament, with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. She came on for Andrea Pigeon, who allowed three runs, all on a home run in the fifth, in 6 1/3 innings of work. Schleicher and Vanessa Lefan each had 2-for-4 afternoons to lead the six-hit attack. Army tallied seven hits. In the opener, Green Bay posted a solid 4-1 victory over Lafayette. Katie Cooney notched the victory by scattering six hits over seven innings. Mollie Kaebisch blasted the first Phoenix home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third that proved to be the game-winning hit. Krissy Hanson, Ashley Billerbeck and Melani Niederer all had two hits apiece. On Tuesday, Green Bay will play its fifth twinbill in six days. The Phoenix faces Cornell at 11 a.m. and Manhattan at 1 p.m. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
