Softball Wins Morning Tilt, Falls in Afternoon Contest
March 19, 2008
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Green Bay (6-9) extended its season-long winning streak to three games Wednesday morning at the Rebel Spring Games with a victory over Cornell, but dropped an afternoon affair to Manhattan to snap the winning skein. In the first game, the Phoenix tallied a 4-2 win over Cornell (11-5) behind the right arm of Anna Bluemel, who picked up her fourth victory of the tournament. She pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on nine hits. Krissy Hanson had a pair of hits for the Phoenix, including a two-run double in the top of the seventh that turned a slim 2-1 lead into a 4-1 advantage. Green Bay surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the frame, but Bluemel was able to get the game's final out on a foul pop-up to the catcher with runners on first and third. Green Bay handed Big Red starter Jenn Meunier (6-1) her first loss of the season. The Phoenix managed just five hits for the game, but three were of the run-scoring variety. Green Bay suffered a tough 3-2 loss to the Jaspers in the second game. Green Bay owns a 6-4 record in the Rebel Spring Games, and all four defeats have been by one run, including a trio of 3-2 contests. All three Manhattan runs against losing pitcher Amanda Margelofsky were unearned, including the winning tally in the top of the seventh, which was scored on a two-out throwing error. For the second straight day, Missy Schleicher looked to be a seventh-inning hero, but her leadoff hit was squandered. Hanson had a 2-for-3 afternoon with an RBI, making her 4-for-7 with three runs batted in for the double header. The Jaspers outhit the Phoenix 5-3. Green Bay wraps up its 12-game, seven-day tournament Thursday with contests against Army (9 a.m.) and Siena (1 p.m.). --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
